1. What is Business English?

Business English is the skillful use of the English language to accomplish business objectives. Therefore, Business English is different for each company function. For an HR manager, Business English would include interviewing skills and some knowledge of the terminology of employment law. For a salesman, it would include small talk skills, such as restaurant and entertainment expressions, and also strong negotiation skills. For an assistant, it would involve telephone etiquette and strong email communication and appointment management skills. In short, Business English not a specific vocabulary or grammar set. Business English skills are targeted to maximize the efficiency of the employees, and ultimately to increase company profits.

2. How is Business English taught?

Since Business English is different for each company, and for each function within each company, Business English training must always be re-designed to fit the specific needs of each business situation. There is no particular book or curriculum which can accomplish this. The key for delivering top quality Business English training for any business is a comprehensive Needs Analysis.

3. What is a Needs Analysis?

A Needs Analysis is performed by a Business English expert who will spend time at a company location, observing and interviewing employees with the purpose of answering several questions, including:
  a. Which English Language skills are needed to perform each of the various job functions of the company?
  b. What is the proficiency level of each employee with regard to the specific English language skills needed for success?
  c. What training program(s) would most efficiently improve proficiency and optimize job performance?
Upon completion of the Needs Analysis, a detailed report will be written, explaining the findings and recommendations of the expert.
