In the beginning level Japanese course students will develop basic communicative skills such as introducing themselves and others, using public transportation, ordering food in a restaurant, shopping and making simple small talk on such topics as family and friends. Students will also learn the basic writing system of katakana and hiragana. Students will begin to read simple text in romaji, katakana and hiragana.
In the intermediate and high intermediate level Japanese course students will continue to work on their speaking skills as well as their reading and writing skills. Students will develop more sophisticated communicative skills such as describing situations, requesting information, making suggestions, making hotel reservations, reading letters, express desires, facts, and opinions. At this level students will begin working with verb tenses and more complex vocabulary and grammar structures. Students will also learn approximately 360 Kanji.
In the advanced level Japanese course students will continue to refine their use of Japanese both spoken and written to communicate in order to develop fluency. Students will be expected to use their language skills to discuss familiar topics as well be able to use their expanded vocabulary and grammar to express opinions on topics that are less familiar. Students at this level are expected to use proper pronunciation, including the use of honorifics, as well as slang. Students will continue to expand their written skills, including learning more Kanji.
